A Familiar Story

A year of lessons, and still no full song?

Learned for a year or two, but still can’t play a complete piece from start to end.

Struggles to read music with confidence, even after regular practice.

Doesn’t yet grasp rhythm, theory or scales — or name a single composer.

If any of that sounds familiar, the method may be the missing piece — not your child’s effort.

Programs

A path for every age, two to ten.

Music for Young Children® (MYC®) runs in four stages, each building on the last. Private and small-group instrument lessons continue the journey.

01
Ages 2.5–3.5

Sunrise 1–3

02
Ages 3.5–5

Sunshine 1–2

1 hr/week · 36 lessons/level. Piano geography and note-reading begin, building toward the first scale.

03
Ages 5–7

Sunbeams 1–3

04

MYC Course

What's actually taught, level by level

Drawn from the official MYC® curriculum — browse the method as a whole, or open any level for the detail.

Every MYC class balances four ways of learning — hearing, seeing, touching and analysing — so each child finds their own way in. It's one of the few early-years methods built around real Conservatory repertoire, meaning the pieces children learn as toddlers carry through to their first formal exams. Playful terms like “critters” and tin sheets give way to standard notation by Moonbeams 3, so graduates walk into private lessons already fluent in the real vocabulary.

01

Singing

Solfège hand-signs build pitch and ear training from the first class.

02

Listening

Active analysis of dynamics, tempo, articulation and chord quality.

03

Keyboard

Progressive piano repertoire, building level by level.

04

Rhythm Ensembles

Multi-part rhythm reading and group coordination.

05

Composition

Creative work from age three, plus an annual International Composition Festival.

06

Homework

Short, age-appropriate activities that reinforce the week's lesson at home.

Ages 2.5–3.545 min / week10 lessons / block · 3 blocks

A pre-piano movement and listening program built for toddlers, taught through stories, songs and games led by puppet characters — Buzz, Buddy and Mellow. Children build the foundations of singing, rhythm and ear training in a flexible, high-engagement format, then move naturally into Sunshine 1.

Questions Parents Ask

Frequently asked questions

How is MYC different from private 1-to-1 piano lessons?
Each 60-minute class packs in at least 10 varied activities to suit short attention spans, and a parent learns alongside the child every week. That parental involvement means confident practice at home — without it, children often progress more slowly and spend lesson time on revision instead of new material.
How is MYC different from Yamaha or other group programs?
Classes are capped at 6 students (versus up to 12 elsewhere), with keyboards along the walls to leave an open floor for movement. The curriculum covers listening, keyboard skills, note reading, rhythm, theory and composition — composition from as young as 3, which is rare at this age. Moonbeams graduates reach a standard that surpasses ABRSM Grade 2.
Do parents need any musical background?
No. Classes are structured so parent and child learn from scratch together — no prior experience required.
Does my child need a keyboard or piano at home?
Yes, home practice matters — a keyboard with at least 40 keys (around $100) is enough to start. It's fine to begin without one for the first 2–3 lessons while we advise you on what to get.
What happens if my child misses a class?
As a group program, individual make-up lessons aren't offered, but we provide a homework sheet so families can stay on track at home. Let your teacher know about planned absences in advance.
When does my child move to independent lessons?
After graduating Moonbeams, or whenever your child shows readiness for more focused, individual instruction.
